Ravel's Introduction et Allegro: History and Lore |
| Summary: |
Ravel wrote the Introduction et Allegro for harp accompanied by string quartet, flute, and clarinet as a commission for the Erard Company. Ravel valued sensuous sound in his music and made it an important aspect of his compositions. The first performance was February 22. 1907 in Paris with Micheline Khan as harpist. The first recording was made in London in 1923 with Ravel conducting and Gwendolyn Mason as harpist. Other important recordings were made by Salzedo, Grandjany, and Lily Laskine. The harp part is soloistic, containing most of the important compositional material, and may be considered a mini harp concerto.
